VPRS 15672 Crown Solicitors' Opinions, Vermin and Noxious Weeds Branch

This series was created by the Vermin and Noxious Weeds Branch of the Department of Crown Lands and Survey (VA 538). It was used by the branch to record the opinions of the Crown Solicitor on matters referred to the Crown Solicitor's Office. Opinions were sought on matters such as the interpretation of Acts, the definition of Departmental authority, land owners / occupiers responsibility in relation to destruction of vermin and noxious weeds, possible prosecutions and legal procedures.The majority of the series is handwritten, with the first entry containing an opinion dated 1910. Further entries comprise opinions dating back to 1896. The last entry in this handwritten part of the volume was recorded in 1938.Each opinion contains reference to correspondence / file numbers, the case name or question, a brief description of the case details as provided to the Crown Solicitor, and a copy of the Opinion received. The Opinions include notes, such as relevant sections of Acts and other relevant cases, judgements, the results of the case, or references to subsequent Opinions.Loose copies of typed Opinions included in the volume cover the period 1951 - 1957 and comprise copies of Opinions, proceeding correspondence as well as relevant acts, departmental regulations and circulars.
