How does eggplant decide its peel color

Eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) is a highly nutrition vegetable crop. Here, six eggplant cultivars with different peel colors and two SmMYB113 overexpression transgenic eggplants with purple peel and pulp were chosen to reveal the molecular mechanism of color formation in eggplants. Two analysis strategies were used to discover the genes related to different peel color of eggplants according to the peel color, flavonoids content, the delphinidins/flavonoids ratio, and the anthocyanins contents. Finally, 27 novel genes were identified to be related to the color difference among eggplant peels, and 32 novel genes were involved in the SmMYB113-regulating anthocyanins biosynthesis network.
