Back-beach line 2006 - Dataset

The project to define the Italian coastal structure was born with the first digitization and characterization of the coastal elements (shore line, back beach, beaches), which took place in 2005 and aimed at the study of the state of the Italian coasts and their evolution. The characterisation of the coastline was carried out by means of photo-interpretation and video digitisation using the IT2000 colour orthophoto database, produced in 1998/1999. This first activity produced the most recent and uniform representation on a national scale of 1:25,000 of the morphological structure of the Italian coast and allowed the localisation and classification of the defence works implemented in recent decades for the protection of the coasts from erosion and natural hazards. The coast line obtained from the orthophotos was subsequently superimposed and compared with the coast line extracted from the historical IGM reference cartography at a scale of 1:25,000. This second activity has allowed, through appropriate elaborations, the analysis extended over a period of about 40-50 years of the variations of the shoreline and the identification and classification of the advancing and retreating territorial areas. The 2000 coverage was first updated in 2010 on the orthophotos of flight IT2006, referring to the period 2004-06, using the same standard used for the LC2000. The update of the LC20V1.0, with the digitization and characterization of the coast line, the back beach line and the beaches emerged was carried out starting from the images published by Google Maps, almost all of which refer to the years 2017-2020. A new standard has been defined capable of maintaining comparability with previous versions while refining some themes. Version 1.0 of the line is not complete with spatial analysis as a co-registration analysis requires additional calculations to eliminate errors found in different regions.
