Reproduction package for "The plastic you didn't make: ocean currents decouple national plastic emissions from national burdens

This repository is the reproduction package for the study "The plastic you didn't make: ocean currents decouple national plastic emissions from national burdens." It contains the derived data, analysis scripts, and figures needed to reproduce all reported results. The study builds a physics-based ledger of cross-border marine plastic responsibility by linking national river-mouth plastic emissions to the Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZs) that bear them through a directed ocean-current connectivity matrix. It finds that national plastic burdens are systematically decoupled from national emissions, that ocean currents make responsibility strongly directional (for the median coastal state, 64% of plastic pressure is foreign in origin), and that a low-income, high-burden group of states bears plastic it neither produced nor can readily manage. The package includes: (1) a self-contained script (reproduce.py) that regenerates every headline statistic and output table from the derived inputs; (2) derived input data — national plastic emissions, the directed ocean-current connectivity matrix, GDP per capita, and an independent emission dataset; (3) result tables and the six manuscript figures; and (4) the upstream and figure-generation scripts. Raw third-party inputs are not redistributed here; their original providers are listed in DATA_SOURCES.md. See README.md for instructions. To run: install the requirements and execute reproduce.py.
