This series comprises an index to special (frequently requested?) correspondence which is now contained in VPRS 3844 General Correspondence Files (Alphabetically Re-arranged Inactive Portion of VPRS 6008, pre 1928 Files), Single Number System and VPRS 6008 General Correspondence Files, Annual Single Number Systems. This self-indexing volume provides reference to selected correspondence by listing the subject matter, relevant correspondence number/s and corresponding registration/classification card.To find correspondence relating to a particular subject or person, the subject or name would have been located in this index and reference to relevant file number (either single number or annual single number) would have been noted.Some entries contain references to top-numbering of relevant correspondence. In others, it might be necessary to follow up the top-numbering process through the Attachment Books (VPRS 6012) Please refer to its microform copy comprising VPRS 6010.This series appears to have been created to facilitate retrieval of special, possibly frequently requested, correspondence. It does not appear to be a part of a formal recordkeeping system but rather a handy retrieval tool created by the agency for its own purposes.The 1977 edition of the Central Registry's Operations Manual, which lists other components of the early correspondence system, does not mention this series.
