Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are largely prescribed to treat acid-related gastro-duodenal diseases and are included in standard therapies aimed to eradicate Helicobacter pylori. Recent studies raised concerns over the possibility that these drugs may alter the gastric microbiota favoring the development of stomach and gut cancers.The aim of the present study was to investigate the ecological effects of PPI use on the gastric microbiota of patients with dyspepsia. Antral biopsies taken from naive and PPI-treated patients were analysed using 16S rRNA gene pyrosequencing and compared to provide a comprehensive survey of dyspeptic stomach microbiotas also in relation to H. pylori infection status.
