NRS-13054 | Defunct Building Societies files

This series consists of files of defunct building societies. Building societies were required to submit the names of trustees, their rules and periodic financial reports to a regulator appointed by government. The Acts requiring mutual societies to make these returns included An Act to regulate Friendly Societies in the Colony of New South Wales (Act of Council 7 Vic. no.10) and An Act for the regulation of Benefit Building Societies (11 Vic. no.10), and subsequent statutes. Documents were initially registered with the Clerk of the Peace under 7 Vic. No. 10 and subsequently with the Registrar of Friendly Societies in accordance with the Friendly Societies Act of 1873 (37 Vic. No.4). From 1902, a Registrar of Building Societies became the responsible public authority under the Building and Co-operative Societies Act, 1901 (Act No.17, 1902).The files contain the rules and regulations of the society and, where applicable, various forms of documentation to conform to the regulation of the statutes, and some correspondence.
