Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU), NSF NHERI 2025: Measurement of Dynamic Properties of Hornsby Bend Soil Using Combined Resonant Column and Torsional Shear Testing

This project is about the use of Resonant Column and Torsional Shear (RCTS) testing to analyze various soil characteristics at the Hornsby Bend site in Austin, TX. The properties measured included shear modulus (G), and damping ratio (D). The data collected in this study can be reused to verify new methods of measuring these characteristics when they are developed. This project is unique because of the testing method used, RCTS is a sophisticated and cutting edge method of measuring these properties. The audience for this research is mainly researchers who will also be testing at the Hornsby Bend site, and will be able to verify their results with ours.
