Microbial diversity in reservoir sediments and derived enrichment cultures with a focus on Mn

Microbial diversity in sediment cores from a drinking water reservoir in Germany and derived enrichment cultures with a focus on manganese (Mn) cycling: The goal is to characterize the microbial community that affects the Mn cycle. Due to increasing concentrations of dissolved Mn in deep water under varying redox conditions and the growing relevance of Mn in aquatic systems more generally, detailed sediment investigations were conducted at several locations in the Wahnbach Reservoir, Germany. 16S rRNA sequencing was performed on sediment samples as well as on enrichment cultures derived from these sediments, specifically targeting Mn-transforming microorganisms.
