One of the goals of the Division of State Development (VA 2717) and its agency, the Central Planning Authority (VA 4151) was not only the encouragement of economic development in regional Victoria but also the encouragement of the decentralisation of industry. One of the means whereby industries were encouraged to become established outside metropolitan Melbourne or remain in this location was by subsidies of freight rates.The records in this series consist of a file for individual large firms located in regional Victoria receiving freight subsidies. Each year the company was to provide financial information to the Committee for a review of the level of subsidy received by the enterprise.
