The plasticity of K. pneumoniae related to the acquisition of resistance and virulence genes coupled with its propensity to act as a nosocomial pathogen underscore the necessity for further investigation. We used whole genome sequencing (WGS) to unravel the sequence types (ST), antimicrobial resistance genes, virulence genes, and phylogenetic relatedness of ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae from carriage rectal swabs samples from hospitalized orthopedic patients in the tertiary referral hospitals in Uganda and Tanzania in East Africa.
