Streptococcus iniae is a Gram positive bacterium associated with infections in several fish species. This pathogen causes outbreaks of meningoencephalitis and septicemia in farm-raised fish that generally induce high morbidity and mortality rates. Disease outbreaks have been described in three distinct regions of the world: North America; the Middle East; and the Asia-Pacific. In 2012, S. iniae was firstly isolated from diseased Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in Brazil.
