Women drivers, for the first time in the history of the Mobilgas Economy Run, will be allowed to compete against men in this famed highway performance test, it as announced today by A.C. Pillsbury, western regional director of the United States Auto Club. Pillsbury said USAC officials opened the competition to women because there are nearly 25,000,000 women motorists in the United States. 'Women have earned the right to compete with men in this highway efficiency test,' he said. 'For all we know, women may prove to be more economical drivers than men.' Women will be allowed to compete under a new rule which permits entrants to supply a second identical car, providing it is driven by a woman. In the competition, whichever of the two cars attains the highest ton-miles per gallon will establish the official score in the final judging. Thus each woman driver will be competing against her male counterpart in an identical car. 'There's hardly a woman driver in the country who doesn't think she can drive better than most of the men drivers she knows,' Pillsbury added."; Supplementary material continues: "Drivers of run cars, both men and women, are selected by the entrants, and the sponsoring General Petroleum Corporation has no jurisdiction over who shall be selected. A car may be entered in the run by a manufacturer, a motor car dealer association or a private owner. The car must be a brand new 1957 four-door sedan or a two-door or four-door hardtop model, which shall be selected at random by USAC officials. The 1957 Nobilgas Economy Run will be held April 14-18 and will go from Los Angeles to Sun Valley, Idaho, with three overnight stops. The drivers will encounter, in four days, all the problems of traffic and open road driving, all the variations in weather, altitudes, and road conditions which an ordinary driver encounters in a year".
