Dye-sensitized solar cell technology is at the forefront of scientific research. Efficient charge injection from the dye to the photoanode is a critically important factor governing the efficiency of solar cells. Polyoxometalates act as excellent electron acceptors for this application; however, they can still suffer from inefficient electron transfer from the dye due to rapid, electron-hole recombination. To mitigate this problem, hybrid materials composed of dye-sensitized polyoxometalates have shown promise. As such, this study investigated the use of a bound system based on a zinc porphyrin dye and a given polyoxometalate serving as an excellent electron acceptor. Specific attention was paid to how the polyoxometalate hindered or promoted the intended charge transfer from the photosensitizer. Characterization data revealed successful incorporation of one, zinc monocarboxyphenyl triphenylporphryin per polyoxometalate species. Additional fluorescence quenching studies showed that 3d-heterometal centers within the polyoxometalate, as well as the presence of the bond, have a drastic effect on effectively permitting charge transfer. These observations were supported further by theoretical rendering of the energies of the frontier molecular orbitals extracted from cyclic voltammetry and UV/Vis spectroscopy data.
