Refugee Education and Well-Being in Malaysia

This thesis investigates the educational challenges faced by refugee youth in Malaysia and evaluates a practical approach to support their well-being. It is structured into two main sections. The first identifies gaps in the informal learning system through interviews with refugee teachers and community organisations. The second uses a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to examine the impact of a cost-effective expressive writing activity in addressing some of these gaps. Results from this intervention increase students’ self-efficacy and emotional regulation while decreasing risky behaviours. Therefore, sustainable funding and programmes are essential as they reshape perspectives on refugee education in transit countries.
