A mapping population of 70 F2-derived F3 families produced from 'BAT93' x 'Jalo EEP558' was used to develop a linkage map of RFLP markers and this linkage map was used to examine the genetic control of two host-bacterium interactions in common bean. 'BAT93' is derived from a double cross of four parents from the Mesoamerican gene pool. It exhibits low nodulation after inoculation of R. tropici UMR1899 and moderate levels of resistance to the pathogen Xanthomonas campestris pv. phaseoli. 'Jalo EEP558' is a selection from the Jalo, an Andean landrace. It exhibits high nodulation and is very susceptible to the pathogen.
