Reconstructing the spatiotemporal trends of lead pollution history is of great significance for understanding the global lead cycle, controlling lead pollution, and evaluating the magnitude and timing of human impacts on the environment. Taking the sediment core of Lake Chenghai, a typical lake on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, as the research object, we reconstructed the high-resolution pollution history of heavy metals (Pb, Zn, Cd, Cu, Co and Ti) in the Yunnan region over the past millennium, and revealed the potential sources of heavy metal Pb and its correlation with global Pb records. The results show that lead concentrations were also high during the Medieval Period (1200s–1500s), and enrichment factor analysis indicates that these high levels mainly originated from anthropogenic mining activities. Over the past two centuries, lead pollution in China has increased rapidly again since the 1980s, which is consistent with the socio-economic transformation and rapid industrial growth brought about by China's reform and opening-up; while in the United States and Europe, lead concentrations rose rapidly in the 1950s and then declined in the 1980s, aligning with the impacts of the Industrial Revolution on developed regions. These records demonstrate that Pb can serve as a regional indicator of the intensity of human activities during the Anthropocene.
