French in Berlin

The project Francophones à Berlin [French in Berlin] is a research project conducted at Leipzig University in 2020, and further taken upon in 2024-2025 at Leiden University. Its main aim is to explore how L2 speakers of German, or adult migrant learners, use and perceive German in multilingual and transnational spaces.

This corpus was created as a pilot study showcasing the perception of German by Francophones. It consists of interviews with French-speaking individuals living in Berlin. The project addresses both the language use and language ideologies of the interviewees, as well as their individual experiences and participation in daily life in Germany.
