Building permits

The Census Bureau’s Building Permit Survey reports all new housing units authorized by building permits dating from January 2000. It does not include unpermitted construction, and also does not differentiate on the status or completion of permitted construction. BPS files are publicly available to download for a range of geographies as monthly or annual summaries. Each month’s data is released within approximately 4 weeks. The .txt file contains information about the number of buildings, units, and value of building permits for each geographic area (county) and time period (month).
