Comprehensive survey of Phaseolus vulgaris viruses in Tanzania and molecular evidence for their occurrence

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)is an important legume crop in the tropics and subtropics. It is an important source of protein to millions of people in developing world. Its production, however, is constrained by diseases, including viral diseases. In this study, the aim was to detect known and unknown viruses in common bean plants in Tanzania. Deep sequencing of viral-derived small RNAs enabled detection of viruses in 11 genera. For the first time, molecular information is made available for about 15 viruses. The information was required for the development of diagnostic tools, designing experiments in future studies and integrated management of viral diseases in common bean fields.
