Although tuber skin colour can be easily determined visually, it is not possible to determine whether white-skinned potatoes have the potential to bear coloured progeny, or to estimate the dosage of functional alleles by visual observation. The development of markers at three loci that contribute to tuber skin colour provides an opportunity to select both parents and progeny for desired genetics for control of colour more efficiently. The next generation sequencing was used to develop single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based markers from candidate genes associated with tuber skin colour in tetraploid potato.
