The Progression of Virtues Meta Analytic Dataset Reproduceable Results

The Progression of Virtues (PV) proposes that individual strengths of character develop in a sequence—Humility, Honesty, Compassion, Responsibility, Courage, and Heroism—each stage compounding the effects of the last. The individual participating in the Progression of Virtues is theorized to contribute to the greater good of society writ large. PV is a social and personality theory of authentic pro-social development offering a path toward the greater good without reduction to utilitarianism or adherence to a codified system of ordinances. Instead, PV declares a genuine and empathetic motivation of compassion driving an individual toward pro-social behaviors with internal motivators instead of external demands or rewards. Across three preregistered meta-analytic tests, I evaluate the sequencing, accumulation, and outcomes of PV. Study 1 applies structural equation modeling to mean-pooled correlations, showing that the sequential chain is a precision fit (χ²(10)=15.65, RMSEA=.062, CFI=.94, TLI=.91, SRMR=.07). Alterations in the sequence were considered including leave one out, skipping stages and differing combinations. In all of the variations from the stated formula i.e., the alternative models; the sequence collapsed. Theorized Cultural Narcissism (CN),(exaggerated self importance, self aggrandizement, self focus), was applied as a moderator to all stages and was deemed a preventative to humility. CN as theorized, could not exist where heroism (daily self sacrificing self transcendent altruism) was habitual. Study 2 synthesizes behavioral and informant-based evidence (k=64, N≈18,500) and shows that the cumulative evidence base itself compounds (Honesty ×1.8, Compassion ×2.3, Responsibility ×2.4, Courage ×2.9, Heroism ×2.9 relative to baseline). Study 3 links PV advancement to self-transcendent, eudaemonic well-being and joy, arising indirectly from fulfilling near-universal values of generosity, fidelity, stewardship, and creative mastery of resources as a by-product of virtue progression an unintended benefit (WVS Wave 7, 2017-2020). Together, PV emerges as a robust sequential pathway to authentic virtue and joy.
