Wind erosion, where soil particles are lifted and transported by the wind, is a key factor in land degradation and desertification around the world. Traditional models for predicting how soil particles are moved by the wind assume a linear scaling relationship between wind strength and the amount of particles lifted. However, these models do not account for the complex, turbulent nature of real-world wind conditions. To address this limitation, we developed a new theoretical model that includes the random behavior of turbulent winds. Our model was tested using wind tunnel experiments and proved effective in predicting particle movement under both dry and freeze-thaw conditions. This improved understanding of how wind interacts with the soil surface helps us make more accurate predictions of wind erosion. Such predictions are crucial for managing soil health, preventing desertification, and mitigating land degradation on a global scale.
