Composition of external private sector debt in developing economies 2011-2020

The majority of external debt taken on by private companies in low and middle income countries was issued as loans, which totaled just over 2.14 trillion U.S. dollars in 2020. This compares to 671.07 billion U.S. dollars in bonds for the same year. By comparison, in 2020, the majority of corporate debt in the United States was in the form of bonds or notes, not loans.
