This series contains the Ledgers of the Culcairn Shire Council. These Ledgers contained all accounts maintained by the Culcairn Shire Council including rates, street accounts, salaries, sanitary services, maintenance, Sundry ratepayers, Invested Funds Accounts, Henty Sanitary and Garbage Fund, Henty Loan Fund, Culcairn Street Improvement Fund, Bank charge and Exchange, hire of plant, Road construction, Stores and Materials, Net Free Assets Account, water trough maintenance and maintenance and repairs to plant. Income and expenditure recorded by the Ledgers was accredited into the General Fund.These accounting records were initially created under s.38 of the Act for establishing Municipalities Institutions 1858 (22, Victoria Act No. 13), and subsequent legislation. This section specified that the council keep books of accounts, which were to be made available to auditors. The Council was also to prepare a detailed account of expenditure and revenue to be published in June and December. Municipal Accounting regulations also governed the format and type of records to be maintained.The Ledgers were accounting records incorporated in a standard public sector accounting system. The purpose of these books in the Culcairn Shire Council accounting system was to record all transactions including debit and credit relating to accounts. Information from the Ledgers was utilised to prepare the required financial statements, such as profit and loss, and half yearly statements.
