Big Scrub Rainforest Restoration

This project is documenting on-ground restoration work undertaken over the past 30+ years in the critically endangered lowland subtropical rainforest of the Big Scrub, located in Northern NSW. With only c. 1% of its former 75,000 ha expanse remaining in small isolated pockets across a fragmented landscape, the Gondwana-descended Big Scrub Rainforest requires a long-term coordinated effort to conserve the incredibly rich biodiversity of this important ecological community and save it from extinction. Currently 40 Big Scrub remnants, located on both publicly- and privately-owned land, are under the care of Big Scrub Rainforest Conservancy and their associated bush regeneration teams. A number of other remnants and re-establishment sites are being restored by land managers.
Records captured in this project will provide restoration ecologists and other environmental practitioners, local landholders and interested groups with a clearer understanding of past work undertaken in the Big Scrub and, in turn, will help to guide future rainforest restoration efforts.
