VPRS 12249 Journal - Miners Phthisis Allowance

Miners Phthisis, also known as silicosis, was a disease suffered as a result of working in underground gold mines. Its symptoms were similar to those of tuberculosis, and it was often fatal.In 1936, the Miners Phthisis Act was established. Applicants thereafter were required to submit applications for assistance under the provisions of this Act and its subsequent amendments.This series consists of monthly statements of payments of assistance to Miners Phthisis sufferers in Victoria. It was used to maintain a record of such payments, and contains the following details:Name (of applicant/payee)Cheque No.Amount paidThe series also contains a section which consolidates cancelled cheques for those applicants who had died since the last payment was issued.
