A reservoir is an artificial water body created in valleys, river channels or low-lying areas via structures including dams, dykes, sluice gates and weirs. It serves as a primary measure for regulating runoff to modify the natural distribution of water resources, and plays a critical role in socio-economic development. A large number of reservoirs have been constructed in the Heihe River Basin, which exert substantial influences on water resources utilization in this region.
