Areas where archaeology is not expected – regional

The Cleaning Opportunities Card identifies sites with a relative and standardised score of 1 to 10 which sites are more or less likely for depilation than others. This map is an area covering the whole of Flanders and shows, per grid cell of 1x1m, the rate of depilation (or the potential for depilation) for each paved area. The rate of depilation was calculated on the basis of 2 inducements for depilation: priorities (where hardening has a negative impact on the environment) and opportunities (where depilation is easily achievable based on the characteristics of the hardening itself). Priorities included pluvial flood risk, natural connection, urban heat island effect and infiltration potential. The opportunities were based, inter alia, on the redundancy of roads in the road network, isolated construction, construction in flood-prone areas, etc. The most up-to-date available map data were used for the different parameters. For each parameter, a relative, standardised score was calculated to express the probabilities of depilation due to a priority and/or opportunity present. A synthesis map was obtained by adding the relative values of the parameters through a multi-criteria analysis in GIS. Score 1 denotes a low relative probability of depilation and score 10 denotes a high relative chance of depilation.
