Waves In Ice (WII) drifting type wave buoy measurements in the Beaufort Sea for September and October 2016

Two drifting type wave buoys were deployed off Barrow Alaska during the JAMSTEC Mirai cruise (MR16-06) on the 10th of September 2016. Both buoys followed similar trajectories until they started to separate, but remained in the same area until the 2nd of November. With the selection of an appropriate high-pass filter of the accelerometer record, the observed significant wave heights and wave periods compared well with the ERA-interim reanalysis wave. On the 18th September, a storm approached the area, and significant wave height reached about 4.9 m on the following day. This wave is likely one of the largest waves observed by an in situ instrument in this area.
