Tea leaf is an important agricultural organ rich in secondary metabolites such as flavonoid, caffeine and theanine. Because insufficient transcriptomic data exists in public databases for understanding molecular mechanisms underlying tea leaf growth, development and secondary metabolites production.In this study, a substantial fraction of tea leaf transcript sequences generated by 454 sequencing can be used to discover novel genes associated with leaf growth, development and secondary metabolites synthesis and will also enable the construct high density microarrays for further characterization of gene expression profiles during these processes.
