As of 1 January 2017, there are 1,266 public inter-communal cooperation institutions (EPCI) with own taxation in France. These include 14 metropolises, 15 urban communities, 219 urban communities and 1,018 communities of municipalities.
The number of isolated municipalities is 5 in the national territory.
