The Social Behavior of Two Species of Juvenile Salmonids

MASTERS THESIS:
This study attempts to elucidate certian intraspecific and interspecific aspects of the social behavior of the juveniles of the eastern brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis (Mitchill), and the coatal rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri (Richardson). It was undertaken with two objects in mind. The first was to examine the behavior of these fishes in the light of recent experiments on other species in which dominance-subordination relations and territoriality have benn discovered and studied. In this way, it was hoped to achieve an insight into the dynamics of trout behavior and a knowledge of what consitutes this behavior. The second object was to explore the behavioral interactiona of the two species in the belief that this might contribute to the understanding of thier ecology.
