This table contains figures on the supply, conversion and consumption of energy. Energy is released during the combustion of, for example, natural gas, oil, coal and biofuels. Energy can also be obtained from electricity or heat or extracted from nature, for example wind power or solar energy. In energy statistics, all these sources from which energy can be used are called ‘energy carriers’. The supply of energy consists of the extraction of energy, the balance of imports and exports and the balance of the change in stocks. This is also called the primary energy supply, because this is the amount of energy available in the country for conversion or consumption. Of the energy conversion, the table gives both figures on the use of energy carriers for conversion (the amount of energy used to make other energy carriers) and on the production of energy after conversion (the amount of energy made from other energy carriers), and on the balance of deployment and production. This balance of energy conversion can be interpreted as the loss of energy during conversion. Next, the energy balance shows the final consumption of energy, this is the final consumption of energy. First, this concerns self-consumption and distribution losses. After deduction of these quantities, the final consumption of energy customers remains. This consists of final energy consumption and non-energy use. Final energy consumption is the energy that energy customers use for energy purposes. It is specified successively for industry, transport and other customers, broken down by various subsectors. The last form of energy consumption is non-energy use. This is the use of an energy carrier to make a product that is not an energy carrier. Data available: From 1946. Status of the figures: All figures up to and including the 2020 reporting year are final. The figures for 2021 and 2022 are further provisional. Amendments as of 14 November 2023: Figures for the Energy Balance Sheet 2015 to 2020 have been revised. These are the following points: — For the years 2019 and 2020, final energy consumption of heat in agriculture is a few PJ lower and that of services a few PJ higher due to an improvement in the interpretation of available figures on the supply of heat from agriculture. — The extraction of geothermal heat by agriculture also involves natural gas consumed by farms themselves. This is now included in the energy balance. It is 0.2 PJ in 2015 rising to 0.7 PJ in 2020. — There have been some improvements in heat data in industry of about 1 PJ or smaller. — Some other data improvements have been taken into account, including up to about 1 PJ, most smaller. Amendments as of 10 October 2023: The energy carrier gas factory cokes has been added. Improved data for the period 1946 to 1989 have been added. Amendments as of 26 May 2023: Preliminary figures for 2022 have been revised. Amendments as of 15 December 2022: The figures have been revised from 1990 to 2019. The overhaul mainly concerns the consumption of gas- diesel oil and light fuel oil and it works in the overlying energy carriers (total petroleum products and total petroleum raw materials and products and total energy carriers). The revision is twofold: — New data on the consumption of diesel in mobile tools have been processed. As a result, the final energy consumption of gas and diesel oil and light fuel oil increases in construction, services and agriculture. The biggest change is in construction (+ 10 PJ from 1990 to 2015, down to 1 PJ in 2019. Agriculture is between 0.5 and 1.5 PJ from around 2010 and the services are between 0 and 3 PJ in the whole period. — The method of dealing with statistical difference has been adjusted. Previously, statistical difference of -3 percent year-on-year from 2013 onwards, following old data (t/m 2012) on diesel road consumption based on the separate excise duty rate only for use for road traffic that existed until that time. The new method eliminates the statistical difference from 2015 onwards: The final energy consumption of road traffic is calculated as a residual item by reducing the total market supplies of diesel with deliveries to other customers. The first and second points both work on final energy consumption road traffic, which decreases by an average of more than 5 percent from 2015. Prior to the 2013 excise adjustment, there was a positive statistical difference, i.e. more supply than consumption. As a result of the improved data in which consumption has increased, this statistical difference has narrowed and negative in a number of years. When will there be new figures? Preliminary figures: April following the year under review. Further preliminary figures: June/July following the year under review. Final figures: December of the second year following the year under review.
