Unconsolidated Aquifers 250K _ Upstate NY

An increase in demand for New York State's groundwater resources has led to an increased need to develop groundwater protection and management policies. The aquifers represented in this theme resulted from an effort to facilitate the identification of the location and extent of significant unconsolidated aquifers; those that consist of sand and gravel and yield large supplies of water to wells. Bedrock aquifers, although significant in some areas, are not addressed here. The scale of the original aquifer maps is 1:250,000. That is also the scale of the published New York State Geological Survey surficial and bedrock geology maps on which they were based. Together these maps form a consistent set of geologic and groundwater maps for use in regional management of the groundwater resources of the State. These maps indicate only the general location of the unconsolidated aquifers; they are not intended for detailed site evaluations. Determination of the precise location of aquifer boundaries or of well yields may require additional data, according to authors of the source maps.
