Cranial placodes give rise to many of the sensory organs and ganglia of the vertebrate head. All placodes arise from a common precursor region, the pre-placodal ectoderm,marked by the expression of the transcription factor Six1, and its co-activator Eya1. Both Six1 and Eya1 are required for normal placode development, however their mode of action is largely unknown. Here, using RNA-Seq in Xenopus laevis, we present the first comprehensive screen for direct target genes of Six1 and Eya1 in the developing placodes.
