Chinese works in the humanities and social sciences translated and published in English (1989-2019)

This dataset compiles the bibliographical information of Chinese works of humanities and social sciences translated into English within the period 1989 to 2019.

Methodological information:

This dataset was compiled according to the following criteria: (1) Format: book volumes; (2) Source language: Chinese; (3) Target language: English; (4) Authorship: PRC authors active or who have been active in mainland China since at least 1980; (5) Geographical area: English language publishers worldwide except PRC publishers; (6) Chronology: translations published between 1989 and 2019.

1. Description of the methods used to collect and generate the data:
The dataset was compiled through combined bibliographical searches in UNESCO's Index Translationum, British Library catalogue, US Library of Congress catalogue, publishers' catalogues, and oline bookstores (Amazon UK and US, and Abebooks).

2. Data processing methods:
Data was manually introduced in the following fields: year of publication, author, title, translator, editor (if applicable), paratexts (if applicable, including the author), publisher, collection (if applicable), and funding institution (if applicable). Bibliographic and translational information was obtained from peritexts (cover, front matter including credit page, acknowledgements, preface or introduction). When it was not possible to confirm whether the book was a translation or an original in English, the title was excluded.

3. Variables list:
year of publication, author, title, translator, editor (if applicable), paratexts (if applicable, including the author), publisher, collection (if applicable), and funding institution (if applicable).
