Wind and solar energy are playing an increasingly vital role in power generation. Due to their own nature, their storage cannot be scheduled. Energy storage is becoming a priority for balancing renewable energy production and energy demand. In that regard, Power to Gas (P2G) plays a key role in meeting future energy needs by designing efficient and flexible energy storage. Alternatively, methanogens aid the process of combining surplus hydrogen with a carbonaceous stream to convert it to methane, making it fully acceptable for direct grid injection. In this study, a novel, strictly anaerobic, thermophilic, hydrogenotrophic methanogen, Methanobacterium thermaggregans strain DP, was isolated from a lab scale anaerobic digester fed with cigarette waste. The high-performance methane-producing strain was isolated in a minimal medium with hydrogen and carbon dioxide as substrates.
