Bentonite clay was saturated and packed in "pressure vessels" to dry densities between 1.1 and 1.6 g/cm^3. Pressure vessels were incubated under oxic conditions for 1-18 months, and were then disassembled and DNA was extracted from bentonite samples. The V4-V5 region of the 16S rRNA gene of each DNA extract was amplified and sequenced on a Miseq (Illumina).
