The RAV is a collaborative project between SESAME and Sohar University, Oman, designed to enhance robotic sample exchange at SESAME’s MS/XPD beamline. The goal is to integrate an AI-powered vision system that improves adaptability, precision, and safety during powder diffraction experiments. By combining robotics with intelligent vision, the project aims to make operations faster, more reliable, and safer for beamline users. At its core, the project focuses on developing a robotic system capable of automated sample handling and accurate alignment. The AI component will use advanced models such as YOLO and EfficientDet to enable real-time object detection, verification, and monitoring. The project follows a clear methodology: starting with system specifications and data collection, then moving into AI model development and integration with robotic control software. Rigorous testing will be carried out both in simulations and directly at the beamline before full deployment. Ultimately, RAV will deliver multiple benefits. It will bring intelligence and adaptability to sample exchange, improve safety through proactive monitoring, and boost efficiency by reducing downtime. Its modular design also makes it scalable for future upgrades and adaptable to other robotic systems. Most importantly, the project fosters collaboration and knowledge transfer between SESAME and Sohar University, advancing applied research in robotics and AI.
