A dataset of midpalatal suture maturation stage in Cone-Beam computed tomography

This study was reviewed and approved by the ethics committee of the Stomatology Hospital of Tianjin Medical University（TMUhMEC20250111）.The dataset was selected from CBCT images taken at the Stomatology Hospital of Tianjin Medical University between October 2020 and March 2025 for diagnosis or treatment needs, comprising 259 male and 341 female subjects, aged between 4 and 25 years. We excluded cases with a history of facial trauma, surgery, orthodontic treatment, developmental deformities of the face or skull, and CBCT images with artifacts or blurriness. Images were taken with KaVo 3D eXam, (Germany) at 5 mA, 120 kV, and 27-s exposure, with an axial slice thickness of 0.1 mm.This study comprises a dataset of 600 Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) images. These images were sourced from patient scans imported using the KaVo eXam Vision software version 1.9.3.13. The maturity of the midpalatal suture in all CBCT images was staged by an orthodontist with over seven years of clinical experience and an oral and maxillofacial imaging physician with over two decades of experience, following the classification method proposed by Angelieri et al. The staging was repeated after a month to ensure reliability. Discrepancies in the staging results from the two sessions were resolved through discussions with an orthodontic professor, leading to a consensus on the final staging: 35 cases in stage A, 113 in stage B, 186 in stage C, 163 in stage D, and 103 in stage E.Additionally, a tabular data file was compiled, recording detailed information associated with each CBCT image. This file, named "Tabular_Data.csv", includes data on gender, age, Demirjian dental age of the left lower second molar, cervical vertebrae staging, palatal length and height, and MPS bone density ratio. These measurements were conducted by the same tester, with three measurements taken and averaged for each parameter.
