Sulfolane is a widespread groundwater contaminant owing to its use in oil and gas refining. In this project, a bacterial consortium that degrades sulfolane was enriched from contaminated groundwater from a gas plant site in western Canada. Molecular techniques including 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing were used to determine the microbial community composition of this culture and to pinpoint putative sulfolane-degrading microorganisms.
