Synchronous Electric Machines for Variable Drive Applications

This thesis provides a holistic view on the application of synchronous electric machines to variable drive applications. Normalised models are used to produce characteristic efficiency maps, and new methods are developed for analysis of linear, static parameter reluctance, wound field, and permanent magnet machines. Variable flux machines are reviewed and a new type of machine is experimentally demonstrated. Methods and characteristics are experimentally verified and high level outcomes are discussed.
