The perspectives of students in an English for specific purposes course at an Indonesian university: A Q methodology study

This study investigates multilingual university students’ perspectives on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in Indonesia. Drawing on translanguaging and the model of investment (Darvin & Norton, 2015), it explores how students’ linguistic backgrounds, aspirations, and daily practices shape engagement with ESP. Using Q methodology, 38 students from six disciplines sorted 48 statements and participated in post Q sort interviews. The analysis revealed three distinct viewpoints, highlighting participants' multilingual practices and investment in academic and professional trajectories. This suggests that ESP learning is shaped not only by language demands but also by personal goals, identity, and broader social contexts.
