Iron deficiency is the top leading cause of anaemia. Intestinal health is negatively affected during iron deficiency anaemia (IDA), with alterations in the gut microbiome and the intestinal barrier. Moreover, iron supplements are the only available option to treat IDA, exerting additional damage to enterocytes and the gut microbiome. In this sense, there is a strong need for gut protective approaches to combine with the treatment during the recovery of IDA. Fermented goat milk (FGM) is studied as a useful nutritional tool to alleviate gut alterations occurring during IDA
