Public Perception of Immigration Officers in Nigeria and Nigerian Embassies Overseas: A Socio-Technical Social Media Analysis

Immigration officers function as frontline representatives of state authority, national security,and international diplomacy. In Nigeria, public encounters with immigration officers, both withinthe country and at Nigerian embassies overseas are increasingly evaluated in digital publicspaces. This study investigates public perceptions of Nigerian immigration officers through asocio-technical analysis of social media discourse. Using Python-based Natural LanguageProcessing (NLP), sentiment and thematic analyses were conducted on publicly available datacollected from X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, YouTube, and Nigerian online forums between2019 and January 2026. Results indicate a predominance of negative sentiment driven byadministrative delays, perceived unprofessional conduct, and technical failures in digital servicedelivery systems. Clear perceptual differences emerge between domestic immigration offices andoverseas missions. Drawing on the author’s dual positionality as a serving immigration officerand a computing professional, the paper interprets these findings and proposes digitally drivenreforms to improve service delivery, institutional trust, and Nigeria’s international image.
