Abstract: This book examines the phenomenon of China's economic displacement of the United States in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), and its implications for global geopolitics. The book introduces the concept of "economic weight" to measure a country's economic influence on another, and "economic displacement" to describe when one country's economic weight surpasses another's. Through extensive data analysis and case studies, Urdinez demonstrates how China has filled economic voids left by U.S. retrenchment in LAC from 2001 to 2020, driven by local demand for alternative economic goods. The book argues that this economic shift has led to a significant erosion of U.S. political influence in the region, affecting public opinion, elite perspectives, and voting patterns in international organizations. While not necessarily resulting in increased alignment with China, this displacement has created new spaces of agency for LAC countries. "Displacement" offers critical insights into the changing dynamics of global economic power and its political consequences, with implications for policymakers, scholars, and practitioners interested in U.S.-China rivalry and its impact on the Global South.
