Nomenclature

The National Land Survey of Finland’s nomenclature data is available as interface services and file products. Border products and file products consist of place name products and map name products. The local name products contain information on approximately 800000 designated places and their names in different languages. Information on the site includes, among other things, the type of place, level location and altitude, and information on the name includes, among other things, the revised written outfit in its Domestic Languages Centre and the language (Finnish, Swedish, Northern Sámi, Inari Sámi or Skolt Sámi). In place name products, each place and its name(s) are only once. The map name products contain the position names selected for the nine standard map products of the National Land Survey of Finland and the data on their cartographic representation. Information includes name placement information, such as the coordinates of the lower left corner of the map text, text orientation and bending, and typographical information such as the font, size and color of the text. The name of a place, such as a river, can appear as a map name several times in the same map product.
