Slovenian Public Opinion, 1990-1998

The cumulative file of repeated questions from the SJM survey on the topic of measuring political pulse and assessing the situation in society covers the period from 1990 to 1998, with at least one questionnaire per year. The selection of questions stems from the last year, 1998, and maintains questions that touch on the theme of the title and which are repeated several times during that period. SJM surveys are included in the selection as long as they contain a more extensive block of questions from the thematic strand. Isolated repetitions of issues are not included in the review, including SJM surveys, which are part of international comparative projects such as ISSP, WVS and Democracy in Eastern Europe, 1991 and the German PB survey. A large number of questions arise from individual surveys, where they appear in a different context of thematically rounded clusters. International files of these surveys include Slovenia and are suitable for comparative analysis between countries. The cumulative file SJMPB_98 contains questions of pressing problems (open question), attachment to Slovenia, comparison of living conditions in a five-year period, happiness. The next theme is the government’s participation in the systemic financing of areas of public life, the responsibility of the state for the development and social security of citizens, both reiterated from the State Role Survey (ISSP). Respondents comment on the question of what the wage differences should be, assess the adequacy of income for survival, satisfaction with the material conditions in the family and satisfaction with the state of democracy in Slovenia. A narrow set of questions from the political barometer chapter (partly taken from the German PB) introduces a general assessment of trust in institutions, the performance of the state and individual ministries, the usefulness of Slovenia’s membership of the EU. They follow views on parties and politicians such as favouring political parties, self-ranking on the left-right dimension and party preference. An assessment of the situation in Slovenia after the Second World War is also offered. It contains all standard demographic variables such as gender, birth year, religious assessment and attendance, employment status, occupation, education, wealth, income, subjective social class, willingness to participate in the survey, and information on the region, whether the settlement is urban and the size of the settlement.
