Foreign Novels Translated in Nineteenth-Century Romanian Print Culture, 1820–1918

This dataset records the nineteenth-century circulation of foreign fiction in Romanian print culture between 1820 and 1918. It contains 1,261 structured records extracted and normalized from DCRT (Chronological Dictionary of the Translated Novel in Romania) data, covering foreign authors, countries of origin, publication channels, venues, publication years, and places of publication. Each record identifies whether the item circulated through a periodical channel or through a book/publishing-house channel, allowing the dataset to support analyses of translated fiction across journals, publishers, cities, and national-literary provenance. The dataset is organized in tidy tabular form. The main fields include the author’s name, country of origin, publication channel, venue name, venue city, year, periodical title, publisher, periodical city, publisher city, and several normalized author-name fields designed for sorting, disambiguation, and computational analysis. The dataset contains 735 periodical-channel records and 526 publishing-house records. The chronological range is 1820–1918, with entries distributed across 24 country-of-origin categories. France is the dominant source category in the current version, followed by records marked as unspecified, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Russia, the United States, and Spain. The dataset is intended for research on translation history, Romanian literary history, periodical studies, book history, and the quantitative study of cultural transfer. It can be used to examine the changing infrastructure of foreign-fiction circulation in Romanian culture, the relative importance of periodicals and publishers, the geography of translation venues, and the distribution of foreign literary sources across the long nineteenth century.
